Lillberg - coolest place in Sweden?

Lillberg from Akkanålke. Storberg to the left.

On wednesday morning it was reported on the radio about the lowest temperature this winter; -42º in Naimakka.
But Linus Holmström, a caretaker on Hotell Laponia, has his own reflections.

-We usually have a little bit colder than what's reported on the news. My homestead Lillberg (close to Storberg...) is a really cold place.

This morning at 6 o'clock for example, we had -45 degrees and the car thermometer showed the same temperature... When it was time to go to work around 9 it had already risen to -37º.

-It would be very interesting if the Swedish metrological institute (SMHI) put up a wheater station here. The reports would surely be different, says Linus.

It was reported from Pjesker village that they had -39º minus. Here in the town we had around -30º.

How it has been for the camping batallion with the visiting Dutch Marines we don't know...

Inside rainbow

An inside rainbow like this happens once in a thousand years or so. Today it happened, here in the Tourist office:

ROGGBIV

The fishy cause of the beautiful rainbow...

The Guoxiken

Peter has been watching (and photographing) birds. In the centre of his attention was the  Siberian jay, a small bird related to crows and Eurasian jays. The Siberian jay is locally known as Guoxiken. There are several different spellings and pronounciations to this fine word, but we are hope for our spelling.

The blog is back...

...after an extended Christmas holiday... We're starting slow with some beautiful pictures:

Unusual sky in the beginning of January

We like fire-pictures in this blog and here is an especially nice fire!

Cristmas spirit

The café Greya Knut in Arvidsjaur is a good place to boost your Christmas spirit (or any spirit, really). A colleague of mine let slip that not only do they have good coffe and a nice atmosphere there, but also a good sense of humor. I went to investigate...

It is nice to have coffee here...

You have to know a little Swedish for this, the sign says: Only staff may be in here. If you stress different vowels it says: Staff only, sheep are in here.

Extreme conditions

We are not far from the darkest day of the year, which is clearly noticable in everyones energy levels. The sun rose at 09.47 this morning and set at 13.27 in the afternoon, which gave us exactly 3h 40 minutes of daylight. the difference compared to the light in the summer is enormus and part of the charm of living here, by the arctic circle...

The Christmas market in pictures

Last Sunday we had a Christmas market in Arvidsjaur for the first time. Typically, the weather had changed from warm and wet to icy cold that very day. Here are some pictures from the market:

A new film editing program...

We have a new editing program at the Tourist office, it is so nice to use compared to freeware it brings tears to my eyes. Behold my first tottering steps in filmmaking with normal tools below:

The control group...

...of the Arctic Circle project had a meeting last Monday, which means we went to Arjeplog in a rental car. This is the journey in pictures:

A stop along the way...the weather was beautiful.

Fresh air

Towards Arjeplog

Lunch at Hotel Hornavan. The food was good and the view was great!

We found a combined meat, berry and souvenir shop...

...with a broad range and beautiful decorations.

This is how it looks. Don't miss it when you go to Arjeplog!

Movie opening night

Saturday is the opening night for Icebound's new movie. See the trailer here:

The movie opening takes place on Saturday at Hotel Lapoina, 21.00 and 15.00 for children. Afterparty after the opening at 21.00!

Restoration

The Byske river and some of its tributary streams are being restored within a project. This is how it sometimes looks during the efforts:

The snow is here!

20-30 cm of white, slightly wet snow has fallen during the night and it is still snowing. I got stuck with my car twice on my way to work despite winter tyres. Enjoy these pictures of the first snow of the season, and note that it looks like the tenth snow of the year...

Tourist office meeting

On September 22-23 it was time for a Tourist office meeting again. This means that all the Tourist offices in the county gather to discuss common goals and problems. Gällivare Tourist office hosted the meeting.

We stayed at Fällnas castle, in great rooms with excellent food.

After spending a day speaking, listening and being serious, the time had come for an activity. Gällivare Tourist office had managed to find one none of us had tried before. Superball...

Part fun, part nauseating...

On the way home we (Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog Tourist offices) made a stop by Harsprånget to stretch our legs and breathe.

Beautiful

We found a small waterfall along the path...

Burning snow in Arvidsjaur

Here is a short resume of our visit in Tjappsåive. We visited Michael and Heike from Germany who are running a Husky-farm.

Michael and Heike and two of their 21 dogs.

Their beautiful house in Tjappsåive.

It says that a picture can tell you more than a thousand words, but I don't think that two thousand words is enough to describe how cute dogs they have.

So cute...

On the way home we saw a nice windshelter.

Free fishing

We went to a small lake to make a flyfishing-film. As a bonus we were able to try one of the best charfishing spots in Sweden!

A very satisfied fisherman.

...and it tastes best outside.

Artful glass

Peter went by Uta Fransson's art glass gallery in Renvallen and happened to bring his camera:

He made Uta model in front of the gallery right away!

Inside were combinations of glass...

...in many different forms...

...and art.

You just have to buy something!

A moment in history

The giant trout

This is may be the biggest brown trout caught in lake Storavan this summer. 5,7 kg was the weight of this fine fish...
