A reindeer has moved in!

A reindeer has been living at our house for at least a week. Every morning when I emerge on the porch it is in a different place. Sometimes it is next lying next to the barn, sleeping, other times it is calmly grazing on the lawn. The last two days I've taken pictures of it, because it is not just any reindeer, it is a prime specimen!

He is grazing calmly...

...when I jump out with the camera.

He tried to escape, but after a whistle from me he posed like this!

Something new

Every day I learn something new, and today I learned something particularly useful: A new quick way to edit pictures in photoshop. It looks like dust has been cleaned from the pictures, and it only took a minute...

Wednesday: A hero's tale

I had a great idea for the blog today...I was going to go fishing and catch a huge fish to post a picture of here. It didn't work out that way. Firstly, I had no luck with the fishing whatsoever, an hour of fishing and not a single bite. Then I was going to take a picture of some seaweed that i caught (slightly bitter from the lack of fish) and walk back to the Tourist Office, when I lost my camera! It fell straight down onto some rocks, bounced a few times and came to rest half covered in water. Then it died and refused to be turned on again. I thought that was it for the camera...

But after drying in the Tourist Office for half a day it came alive again...it is a true hero!

The lake

Nice path by the lake

Tuesday: The old rectory

I had a brilliant idea this morning! Why not go to the old rectory (local museum) and take some pictures with the morning sun, I thought. As usual, the result was less than perfect, the sun disappeared the minute I got there...

On the way...the water was unbelieveably clear today.

The clouds closed in.

It is a very nice area, with a stage and everything.

Morning in Arvidsjaur

I arrive early to work these days, which means I have time for a walk with the dog and taking some pictures. Here are the Monday-pictures:

On the way from the Tourist Office to Nyborgstjärn

A wet dog, after walking around the wole lake I couldn't resist throwing him in the water...

Interesting vehicles

These fine bicycles visited the Tourist Office the other day. The children's seats have little pedals so they can do their part of the work...

The rouge AC

The staff at the Tourist office in Arvidsjaur had some problems with an air conditioning on nThursday; it wouldn't stop blowing. It was full storm and papers were flying all over the place. Because of the cold winds you had to were a hat, but since they didn't have one they had to use whatever they could find. The result is evident in the picture below:

"A-smällen"

The third of July the traditional commerce feast "A-smällen" took place again. It had been moved from "Storgatan" to "Östra skolgatan" this time, because of road constructions on the mainstreet. The weather was lovely and the people were in a good mood.

A lot of people gathered at "A-smällen" which, this year, took place at "Östra skolgatan"

"Candy-rain", popular among the children

Sweet music from some "singing-birds" in hats

A tuff vacation

This is Åke Svensson , who started on his bike in Klippan in Skåne,
and has now reached Arvidsjaur. He has gone almost 2000 kilometres in ten days.

This is the list of how far he has come every day.

Fishing on Storavan...

A fine perch!

Tractor tourism

This sight met us when we came to work this morning:

These interesting vehicles had come all the way from Switzerland to Arvidjaur Tourist office!!! How many hours it must have taken to drive here...

Sometimes they stay and work along the way. Gas is not for free...

Little tractors from Switzerland

Happy owners

Educational trip

We had an educational trip on June 9 with staff from the Tourist office, Hotel Laponia, Silvercross 45 and the airport. The journey this year wenrt to the west.

The day in pictures:

We started with a guided tour in Lappstaden. Elisabet is a good guide...

Spring feelings

It's beemn raining all day , which is very unusual for Arvidsjaur. Most of the annual preciritation seems to come down as snow during the winter here. But today was a fall-like spring day, that you can enjoy with some candles or a fire in the fireplace just because you know it's spring.

The weather forecast says that the warmth will arrive in Arvidsjaur this weekend. The spring is over and it is time for pasturage...here are some photos of the pets being set loose on May 29 last year:

The summer is made!

Finally I am a canoe owner. We had the canoe on  home delivery, which meant we had to go to Umeå, 300 km away to get it. Had it been anything besides a canoe we wouldn't have bothered, but since there are so few companies actually selling canoes up here in the wilderness it felt like going next door to get it. This is the beauty in question:

Ah, it is nice!

The baptism

The maiden voyage took place in one of the smallest creeks on earth, a stone's throw from home. Not the best idea, we realised when we had to carry the canoe more than half the way :)

One of many obstacles...

GPS trip

We are in the process of making a new accommodation brochure, where the GPS coordinates for the different places will be included. Consequently, we went for a little ride to collect them. This is a couple of photos from the trip:

The view from Akkavare, the opposite direction of the usual view from Lillberget in the centre of Arvidsjaur.

Swans. You had to sneak up on them, they wanted to swim away. Mom, dad and baby swan.

When I saw this picture I  thought  that the baby should have left "home" already, so I went to wikipedia for a quick answer. Apparently the time the  swans stay with their parents is different from case to case. Here is the piece of text:

" Whooper swans pair for life, and their cygnets stay with them all winter; they are sometimes joined by offspring from previous years. Their preferred breeding habitat is wetland, but semi-domesticated birds will build a nest anywhere close to water. Both the male and female help build the nest, and the male will stand guard over the nest while the female incubates. The female will usually lay 4-7 eggs (exceptionally 12). The cygnets hatch after about 36 days and have a grey or brown plumage. The cygnets can fly at an age of 120 to 150 days."

Interesting...

The firewood season is here...

It starts slowly, people get a certain wildness in the eyes, start to go straight home from work, a speck or two of sawdust show up on their clothes and you hear a word or two about firewood at the store. Then it is suddenly here: the firewood season! You become addicted to making firewood. Day in and day out you cut, split and pile until your back bleeds. Every now and then you take five minutes to  walk along the piles with a tear of mingled pride and contentment in your eye...this goes on for a few weeks, then you notice a sudden drop in the wood addiction (often connected to the making of  one year's supply of wood). And the madness is over as quickly as it begun. Until next year...

It brings tears to ones eyes...

Big log, small dog...

The apple of ones eye...

Opening of Ledfat nature reserve

Thursday 2/4 was the opening of Ledfat nature reserve. Linda Olofsson from " Mitt i Naturen" ( Swedish nature TV-show) was master of cermonies.

Dog sleigh

On Thursday 24/3  we were on "Nymånen" with som agewnts from Germany. And for the first time in their lives they had the opportunity to drive dogsleigh. It was really fun. Here are some pictures of the day in Auktsjaur.

Snowmobiling the weekend away...

Here are some pictures from last weekend:

What a view!

Is there anything more trying than walking uphill in deep snow in spring?

I like to call this picture "The triplets"...

A cloud of smoke...

Sometimes it's all good...

Sometimes it's not...

Into the sun...

At last, our own header...

I finally took the time to learn how to put a custom made header in the blog. At first it felt like moving a mountain, but it was really quite easy and fun. The picture is of the Arvidsjaur horizon, taken with a good camera. The pictures below were taken on the same day, and the horizon is easily recognized...but you may expect it to change again rather soon.

The sun was shining, -20 degrees and a nice breeze. Couldn't feel my fingers after three pictures...

The sky was beautiful in this picture.
